By Noel Coward
Directed by Jacob Murray Friends, Janet Ebony and Peter Chelsworth, are forced to share a sleeping compartment following a disastrous train crash on their way back to London from Paris. Scandalous outrage ensues on arrival home as Janet's husband, Paul, and her mother-in-law accuse them of adultery and public indiscretion. Janet's mother and Peter's fiancée, Lavinia, also enter the maelstrom. And then there's Mavis, who tries not to take sides but has been secretly carrying a torch for Paul all these years... Premiered in 1927, this early Coward play, following on from The Vortex, is an experiment in form and content that aims to expose middle class values and conventional morality whilst trying to propose an alternate lifestyle with its own moral creed. By turns, a witty comedy and a social drama, Coward's lost play (rediscovered in 2016 and staged at the Finborough Arms in London) foreshadows the genius of the plays to come.
