The Old Rep statement on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 upon the cultural sector the Old Rep Theatre has taken the difficult decision to remain closed to public performances until 2021.

The safety of our staff, audiences and performers is paramount and until social distancing restrictions are relaxed sufficiently for cultural venues we are unable to open our doors to audiences.

Our Christmas show Beauty and the Beast will be back at Christmas 2021, bigger and better than ever.  A number of shows have either been cancelled or postponed.  Our small team will be contacting all patrons who have booked for shows and performances in order to discuss ticket options.

Please be patient as they work through all customers in order of shows. Whilst the doors to the public may be closed, the stage at the Old Rep is still being used to create an amazing digital performance of The Wind in the Willows that we look forward to sharing with you all at Christmas this year.

Many theatres that have been forced to cancel performances are charitable enterprises and have reached out to their audiences and asked for their support by donating their tickets. While ticket holders are all entitled to a refund for cancelled performances, the financial toll that refunding these tickets will have on small, charitably funded theatres is vast. We urge anyone who can afford to donate the cost of their ticket to show their support for our industry by doing so. If you would like to donate your ticket please email our Box Office team.

Thank you for your patience and understanding at this difficult time.

Stay safe, and we hope to see you all soon!

A statement from Michael Penn (Executive Director) and Gaynor Cheshire (CEO)

update: Friday 27 March, 10:43am

The safety of our audience and workforce is paramount to us as we navigate this challenging time. We, therefore, regret to announce that as of today The Old Rep Theatre will close in light of the most recent official government advice. We will remain closed until further notice and will re-open as soon as possible, following government recommendations.

If you have bought tickets to a show that has been cancelled, then you are entitled to a refund/exchange we will be in touch. Please bear with us during this time.

The magic of theatre lies in its live performances and it is not something that can be experienced in the same way remotely. Its ability to lift people and entertain people even in times of difficulty is unparalleled and so we are extremely grateful to all of our audiences, who have continued to support us for as long as they can.

At this time, we must come together to support each other. Theatre as an industry relies on its audiences entirely to exist. We will rely on you now more than ever.

We are currently following and monitoring the current situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are taking advice from Public Health England, UK Theatre and the UK Government.

The safety and well-being of visitors, staff and artists are our top priority. We have added additional signage around the building encouraging visitors to maintain good hand hygiene and changing some of our staff routines to involve less hand-to-hand contact.

There are currently no plans to close the building, unless there is a heightened risk to those involved.

Should there be any changes to our arrangements, we will post details on our website, social media pages and bookers will be contacted via either e-mail or telephone. We are sharing regularly updated guidance with staff on how to prevent catching and spreading the virus.
