Southside Producers is a collective of emerging producers age 16-25 originally formed by The Old Rep and Beatfreeks, one of Birmingham’s most dynamic and diverse, young people-led cultural organisations. Support for the project and collaborations have also come from Arts Connect, Birmingham Hippodrome, MAIA Creatives and The Arcadian.
Over the last 18 months, Southside Producers have curated and staged a number of events at The Old Rep and around the city.
Music Menu (June 2016) was an intimate evening of good food and live music. Staged at The Edge in Digbeth as part of Digbeth First Fridays, Music Menu championed local artists and street food vendors.
During On the Edge (July 2016), the World Festival of Theatre for Young Audiences which brings together young audiences and arts professionals. Southside Producers curated pre- and post-show performances and installations that were enjoyed by The Old Rep’s audiences and conference delegates.
B-Side Hip-Hop Festival (September 2016) is an annual festival celebrating all things Hip-Hop led by Birmingham Hippodrome. B-Side takes over the Southside area of Birmingham with a free, exciting weekend of talks, pop-up performances, film, spoken word, workshops, D/VJs and graffiti artists. In 2016, Southside Producers curated performances and workshops at The Old Rep, New Street Station and John Lewis.
NowBrum (March 2017) was a three day festival of live performance, music, visual arts and film at The Old Rep which celebrated the past, present and future of our city through new and multidisciplinary works created by some of Birmingham’s young and emerging artists. To encourage more young people to engage with this work, Southside Producers and Arts Connect offered 50 free tickets for young people age 12-18.
Culture Catwalk (September 2017), as part of Birmingham Weekender, gave the people of Birmingham a chance to take to the stage. Programmed, marketed and project managed by Southside Producers, this unique stage outside the Bullring showcased dance, music, fashion, comedy and much more from Birmingham and the West Midlands.
