The Old Rep Theatre and The Electric Cinema join forces for BHW 2023

From the UK's oldest working cinema to the UK's first purpose-built repertory theatre on the same street, The Electric Cinema and The Old Rep are joining forces for Birmingham Heritage Week for one day only.

They will be co-hosting a historic tour of both venues on Thursday 14 September, starting at The Electric Cinema then moving on to The Old Rep Theatre with refreshments including hot drinks and biscuits served afterwards.

Since opening its doors on 27 December 1909, The Electric Cinema has been welcoming audiences for over 120 years. Its story charts the entire history of cinema, taking in the silent era, it’s time as a news theatre, then cartoons, arthouse and continental titles. This is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes at The Electric and visit the places the public never sees. Their knowledgeable guide will tell you tales about the cinema’s history, it’s workings and be on hand to answer all your questions.

The Old Rep (previously known as Birmingham Repertory Theatre) first opened its doors in 1913 and occupies a unique place in theatre history as Britain’s first purpose-built repertory theatre. The theatre first opened on 15 February 1913 and with a wealth of local talent, the theatre produced a rolling bill of plays, both classic texts and new writing. The Old Rep are opening their doors to reveal a fascinating history with their behind-the-scenes tours led by their fantastic guides.

The advisory age for the tour is 15+ and please note that due to the age of the buildings both tours will involve climbing numerous stairs and is not suitable for anyone with impaired mobility.
